About

Student Reflection Leaders (SRLs) are student leaders that are hired, trained, and matched through the Office of Leadership & Civic Engagement to support quality service-learning in designated courses. For students, this is a great opportunity to develop leadership, facilitation, and community engagement skills. SRLs are paired with a course and faculty member and work up to 5 hours/week per assigned course.

The SRL and instructor work together to define the SRL’s duties for the semester and submit an Assignment Agreement to OLCE that summarizes the scope of duties. Main duties typically include leading in-class presentations like “Intro to Service-Learning” and “Serving Across Difference” and designing and leading in-class critical reflection activities. SRLs can also assist with communicating with community partners, conducting site visits, addressing student concerns about service projects, checking-in via email or during class time about service hours, and in some cases, driving groups to their project in OLCE vans.

Position Description

OLCE seeks students who are passionate about experimental learning. Strong consideration will be given to candidates who’ve taken at least one (1) service-learning course at UNCG and/or significant community service experience. Successful SRL applicants will demonstrate the ability to engage with diverse populations, facilitate workshop presentations and lead others through the process of critical reflection.

 Qualifications:

  • Understanding of the core dimensions of service-learning
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with faculty, students, and community partners
  • Successful completion of a service-learning course (strongly preferred)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or state issued ID
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend the SRL Orientation Retreat each semester (date will be emailed upon acceptance)
  • Attend mini conferences with program coordinator
  • Attend and participate in one OLCE sponsored event
  • Collaborate with university faculty and staff instructors to plan presentations, reflection activities and class discussions related to service-learning
  • Submit monthly timesheets to OLCE
  • All other duties as assigned
  • Meet with faculty or staff instructor to discuss course expectations and scheduling for the semester, communicated in the Instructor/SRL agreement. This may include attending service events with students and completing administrative tasks to support the instructor
  • Communicate with students bi-weekly to build rapport, discuss service-learning assignments and address concerns regarding the service project (includes but is not limited to attending class sessions and/or checking-in via email)
  • Facilitate three (3) workshops for students: 1. Intro to Academic Service-Learning, 2. The Art of Critical Reflection, and 3. Serving Across Difference

Hours

  • SRLs should expect to work an average of 2-5 hours per week, not to exceed 80 hours per semester. Note: Students cannot average more than 29 per week for all campus jobs

Compensation

  • $8.00 per hour.
